According to MLB.com, Andy Sonnanstine has locked up a spot in the Rays' rotation. So far this spring he's tossed 14 innings while only giving up one run and striking out 8. His ERA stands at 0.64. John Madden had little choice but to give Sonnanstine a chance.
Last year in AAA Durham, he struck out 66 in 71 innings. He also sported a 2.06 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.
That makes 3 consecutive years in 2005, 2006 and 2007 that Andy finished a season in the minors with an ERA below 3.00.
In 130 innings with the Rays last year however, his ERA was 5.88. Sonnanstine's name was thrown around by many experts on Friday night at Tout Wars as a Sabermetric guy.
The reasoning behind that notion is that his 5.88 ERA shouldn't have been all that bad. His ERC differential was 3rd worst in the majors behind Chris Young and Dustin McGowan. His ERC was 4.64, over a full run lower.
His DIPS differential was dead last in the majors. While his actual ERA was 5.88, his DIPS ERA was a stellar 4.07.
While Sonnanstine is no ace, he's being undervalued terribly. His numbers weren't so bad last year and he's been a consistent stud in the minors over the last three years.
Give him a look in the late rounds as you finish your draft.
